The recent Master of Science Orientation welcomed over 1,100 new full-time Master of Science students to Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Orientation offered a comprehensive introduction to life at Carey and the resources available to help students succeed throughout their time at Carey and beyond.

Over the course of the week, Carey hosted three Master of Science orientations for programs based in Baltimore, programs based in Washington, D.C., and an International Orientation. Each orientation included activities and events to help students get to know their peers, and to preview the opportunities they have as a students. Below is a recap of just a few of the 23 events and activities that took place throughout the month of August.

Dynamic Teaming with the Center for Innovative Leadership
This transformative workshop on dynamic teaming was hosted by the Johns Hopkins Center for Innovative Leadership. This session was designed to help students understand and enhance team dynamics by fostering respect, trust, and accountability. Through interactive exercises and reflective discussions, participants gained valuable insights into psychological safety, ideation, and working norms, all crucial for building inclusive and high-performing teams. The workshop provided a practical framework for students to apply these concepts in their academic and professional pursuits, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and intentionality in diverse group settings.

Carey Q&A
Carey Business School organized a virtual Q&A session for incoming students to ask questions about life in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. This session was an invaluable opportunity for students to get practical advice on various topics, such as navigating public transportation, finding the best grocery stores, and integrating into the Carey community. The session also covered essential tips for the first day at Carey and recommended apps that can make life easier in both cities. The combination of expert advice and the opportunity to ask personalized questions helped students feel more prepared and confident as they embark on their new academic journey.

Baltimore/Washington, D.C. Exploration
To help students familiarize themselves with their new surroundings, Carey staff led walking tours in both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. These tours offered students a chance to explore their school buildings and the surrounding neighborhoods, providing a sense of community and belonging from the outset. The Washington, D.C. tour started in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center, Carey’s Washington, D.C. location, and included a tour of classrooms, student gathering spots, and a scenic walk-through of nearby areas, ending at the White House where students could network with their peers. The Baltimore tour began at the Harbor East building, where students were introduced to key areas such as classrooms and the Student Success Center. The tour continued with a walk-through of neighborhoods around Carey, ending at Patterson Park.

Data-centric workshops
Orientation featured a series of data-centered workshops aimed to provide students with an overview of what they will be getting out of their Master of Science courses at Carey.

Python Bootcamp
The Python Bootcamp was divided into two days, each focusing on different aspects of Python programming. Day one covered the basics of Python and its data analysis capabilities, making it accessible for students with little to no prior experience. Day two delved deeper into Pandas–Python’s data handling library–and more advanced data visualization techniques. The bootcamp was led by faculty member Naser Nikandish and included a special Q&A session with Carey alumni who use Python in their current work, providing students with practical insights into how Python is applied in various industries.

Introduction to R
Led by Carey Professor Changmi Jung, who teaches the Data Science and Business Intelligence course, this workshop introduced students to R, a powerful programming language for statistical computing and data analysis. Designed for beginners, the session provided a strong foundation in R, preparing students for the data-driven challenges they will face in both their academic and professional careers.

All Things Tableau
This workshop, taught by Carey Assistant Professor of Practice Mohammad Ali Alamdar Yazdi, focused on data visualization using Tableau. Students learned how to use Tableau to analyze and visualize large datasets, creating data-backed narratives that inform decision-making processes.
