Leadership is evolving beyond traditional definitions and boundaries. And the Center for Innovative Leadership at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School believes that leadership is everywhere.

With this in mind, and the evolving landscape of leadership today, CIL has created the “Living Leadership” podcast as a forum for Carey Business School students and faculty to engage with thought leaders and industry pioneers. “Living Leadership” aims to highlight non-traditional leaders alongside C-suite executives, who share their unique leadership journeys and lessons learned, while discussing how they mindfully deploy empathy, competence, and agility.

In each episode, listeners will experience a unique blend of leadership theory and real-world application, providing insights, tools, and inspiration for leading effectively and with integrity.

The first episode of “Living Leadership” featured James Steinberg, current dean of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University and former deputy national security advisor to President Bill Clinton. Hosted by MBA candidates Sujit Koppula, Mike Zipperer, and Sara Bliden, the episode explores leadership across government and academia. Steinberg offers his perspective on decision-making contrasts and the impact of evolving technology.

The second episode, “Gamifying Growth,” will be released on September 18, 2024. Episode two will feature Brian Trelstad, senior lecturer of business administration at Harvard Business School and partner at Bridges Fund Management. Hosted by MBA candidates Matt Rappaport and Megan Putman, this upcoming episode will explore the role of competition, gamification, and social entrepreneurship in team dynamics and growth.

Season one: Fellows take the lead
The current season of the “Living Leadership” podcast features interviews led by the 2024 CIL fellows. Each podcast episode is the result of a comprehensive capstone project, where teams of fellows have selected their interviewees, crafted insightful questions, and facilitated meaningful conversations while recording. A common theme in these episodes is reflection, with each guest asked to consider this thought-provoking question: “Looking back at earlier leadership moments in your career, are there any situations that you would handle differently, or things that you wish you had known sooner in your leadership journey?”

Topics are wide-ranging and timely, exploring how technology shapes leadership, the role of competition in team dynamics, the advantages of working with smaller organizations, and strategies for handling failure. The conversations also dive into the value of discipline, resilience, and how loving what you do is essential for creating lasting success and social impact.

What’s next
Looking ahead, “Living Leadership” will continue to inspire and inform through season two, which will feature interviews with Carey faculty and leaders from cutting-edge organizations, such as NASA. These future episodes will bring insights from diverse innovators who are tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges, with a focus on creating sustainable, impactful solutions for global progress.

Stay tuned for more on how leadership is evolving–and how you can be part of the conversation.
