It’s been one year since Johns Hopkins Carey Business School moved into its second location at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, and the positive impact is still being felt across the entire Carey community.
Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center is surrounded by some of the city’s most iconic attractions, museums, dining spots, and more. The building features spaces that allow for collaboration between global leaders, policymakers, faculty, and you–the next generation of innovators and leaders. As a student at Carey, you are positioned to make a global impact.
Just as there are limitless opportunities to expand your mind in the classroom, the opportunities to explore the city outside the classroom are endless. Whether you want to take a break between classes or explore the city on your own time, there is plenty to see and do, all within walking distance.
Iconic attractions
Carey Business School is located within a 1.2-mile walk from multiple iconic attractions in D.C. Take a stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue and admire the most famous residence in America–the White House. Just blocks away from Carey, you can also visit the historic site where President Lincoln was assassinated, now home to a museum and performing arts center. Another short walk from the Hopkins Bloomberg Center will take you to the National Archives, which houses the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence.
Take a trip to one of the many Smithsonian Museums, most of which are free. The National Gallery of Art is located right across the street and features a must-see underground walkway connecting the east and west buildings called Multiverse. The National Sculpture Garden transforms into an ice rink during the winter, making for a fun weekend activity with friends and family. Other nearby museums include the National Museum of the American Indian, the Air and Space Museum (free tickets required), the Natural History Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery.
A 15-minute walk from Carey will take you to the National Mall, where you can explore historic landmarks like the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and World War II Memorial. The National Mall is also a great place for walking, bike riding, or enjoying a picnic with friends and family.
Dining hotspots
Washington, D.C. is known for its diverse food scene, and there are plenty of options in the areas surrounding Carey. The National Mall, Penn Quarter, and Chinatown neighborhoods are all nearby and offer great cuisine. Seafood lovers can head to Old Ebbitt Grill, one of Washington, D.C.’s most iconic restaurants, just steps away from the White House. Ben’s Chili Bowl is a D.C. staple with multiple locations and has welcomed visits from several U.S. presidents over the years. For a fun weekend outing, head to the Eastern Market in Capitol Hill for its weekly farmers and craft market to stock up on fresh produce and veggies.
Entertainment in the capital
Whether you’re into basketball, baseball, concerts, or simply looking for a fun way to spend time with friends, Washington, D.C. has entertainment for everyone. The Capital One Arena is a 10-minute walk from Carey and is the city’s premier venue for sports and concerts. It is home to the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals.
The city’s MLB team, the Washington Nationals, play at Nationals Park, just a few Metro stops away from Carey. During the season, you can enjoy everything from weekend games to themed events like, “Pups in the Park” and “Dollar Dog Nights.”
Sports venues in the city often double as concert stages. Both Capital One Arena and Nationals Park host large-scale summer concerts, where you can catch top performers from various genres.
Transportation around the city
Thanks to U-Pass, transportation for Carey students is incredibly accessible. U-Pass is a college program that gives students unlimited rides on Metrorail and Metrobus throughout the semester at a subsidized rate. All Washington, D.C.-based Carey students are enrolled.
If you’re looking to travel outside of the city, Union Station is in close proximity to the Hopkins Bloomberg Center. Open 24 hours to ticketed passengers, Union Station is a hub for Amtrak and MARC trains, making it easy for Carey students to travel outside the city.
