Welcome to Johns Hopkins Carey Business School! Moving to a new city can be exciting and a bit overwhelming. As you become familiar with student life at Carey, don’t forget to explore all that Baltimore has to offer outside the classroom.
“Charm City” is one of the country’s oldest, largest, and most diverse cities. Whether you like exploring historic neighborhoods, cheering on local sports teams, or indulging in the city’s diverse cuisine, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Iconic attractions
Baltimore is home to an array of world-class museums and historical landmarks catering to various interests. The Walters Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art offer free admission and feature impressive collections of ancient artifacts and modern art. The American Visionary Art Museum is another must-visit known for its unique and thought-provoking exhibits. Consider visiting Fort McHenry, the birthplace of the country’s national anthem, for a tour of the historic landmark and to see cherry blossom trees in bloom. Federal Hill Park, a short walk from the Inner Harbor, offers some of the city’s best views. Pack a picnic with friends or enjoy some quiet time to read a book while enjoying the views.
Getting around
One of the most scenic ways to explore Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is by taking a water taxi. For Carey students, this is an affordable and unique way to get around. The water taxi connects many of the city’s neighborhoods, making it an easy option for daily commutes or weekly adventures. The Baltimore water taxi offers free public transit Monday through Friday that links commuters to key locations across the harbor. Water taxis also offer paid scenic boat rides that pass through historic landmarks, and popular attractions and neighborhoods.
Dining hotspots
When it comes to dining, Carey sits on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor–a destination for seafood lovers. From the iconic crab cakes in Baltimore’s Lexington Market to the trendy eateries in the neighborhoods surrounding Carey such as Fells Point and Federal Hill, you will find various options to satisfy your cravings. Baltimore’s ethnic diversity is also well-reflected in its food offerings, which include Italian, Mexican, Indian, Irish, German, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, French, Greek, Thai, and many others. Don’t forget to check out all the great coffee shops for a spot to study with a snack and hit the farmers market on the weekends to stock up on local fruits and veggies.
Game days
One of the quintessential Baltimore experiences is attending a Baltimore Orioles baseball game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. If you’re a baseball fanatic or just looking to enjoy a day–or night–out, game days offer an electric atmosphere and a chance to immerse yourself in local sports culture with your friends. Each baseball season, Johns Hopkins puts on Hopkins Night at Camden Yards. Spend a night at the ballpark with your classmates and co-workers, with more affordable ticket prices than usual. And in the fall, don’t forget to catch a Baltimore Ravens game at M&T Bank Stadium. With a history of strong performances, many playoff appearances, and two Superbowl wins, the Ravens continue to make Baltimore proud. Plus, the stadium’s proximity to many restaurants makes it easy to grab a bite to eat before or after the game. Deck yourself out in purple and black and enjoy the atmosphere!
Exploring Carey’s neighborhoods
Each of Baltimore’s neighborhoods has its own unique charm and personality. And Carey students are in the perfect location to take full advantage of Baltimore’s vibrant Harbor East neighborhood. A bustling hub of activity, the area offers a blend of business, culture, dining, and entertainment, all within walking distance of Carey.
The neighborhood is home to many corporate offices, financial institutions, and startups. It is the ideal environment for students to immerse themselves in business and connect with professionals in their field of interest. Beyond its professional landscape, Harbor East is a lively area where in between classes, you can explore shops, dine outdoors, grab a quick coffee, or take a walk on the harbor.
