On June 13, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School’s Employer Relations team hosted a Master of Science Alumni Networking Reception at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C.

The event brought together alumni, faculty, and soon-to-be graduates of Carey’s Master of Science programs to engage in networking, conversations, and support for Carey students. Tours of the new Johns Hopkins building in Washington, D.C. were also available to alumni who have not yet seen the latest innovations at Johns Hopkins.

The event had more than 20 alumni and over 70 full-time MS students in attendance. Alumni represented industries including finance, real estate, government, technology, energy, and more.

Senior Associate Director of Employer Relations Sara Bliden said the team wanted to host the event to build community among the MS alumni, students, and faculty.

“One of the things I love most about working at Carey is the dedication and commitment of our alums,” Bliden said. “They are so eager and willing to give back. They understand that the success of current students contributes to the greater success of our Carey community and that we are building something really special here. It was truly rewarding to see this in action.”

The event was broken up into three sections–opening remarks, speed networking, and open networking. Food and drinks were provided along with special Carey shield cookies as parting gifts.

Alumni shared career insights, reconnected with their peers to explore new professional opportunities, and engaged with students to foster growth and collaboration. The event was also an opportunity for students to learn how Carey alums are using their degrees.

“I’m eager to support current students because I understand firsthand how crucial networking is for job searching having been in their position just last year,” said Barry Liu, a 2023 Master of Science in Information Systems alum.

Liu is currently an Information Management Analyst at the International Monetary Fund. He was also an international student while at Carey.

“For international students like me, the Johns Hopkins network is an essential part of our personal and professional lives in the United States. Learning from others’ work and life experiences offers valuable reflection and inspiration,” Liu said.

Bliden had similar remarks. “Job searching can be challenging, especially for our international student population. This is where the power of your network comes in,” she said.

The Employer Relations team created the event to facilitate connection and conversations, and the chance for alums to help open doors to opportunities in their organizations while sharing candid advice with soon-to-be graduates.

“Our hope is that this event will turn into a tradition–students will remember to come back as alums the following year to eagerly share their insights and advice,” Bliden said.
