Carey students hear from full-stack developer at Oracle

Students in the Master of Science in Information Systems program recently attended an exclusive speaker series with Scott Stroz from Oracle.

At Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, our degree programs are more than just the coursework. Experiential learning is integrated into every one of our degree programs.

Carey students have the unique opportunity to hear and learn from real-world industry leaders, take part in hands-on trainings, and collaborate with faculty on cutting-edge research. Our hands-on courses and events prepare students to face the most difficult challenges and prepare them with knowledge and tools to succeed in the industry.

Recently, students in the current cohort of the Information Systems program–soon to be the Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence for Business program in Fall 2025–had the opportunity to host Scott Stroz, a developer and advocate from Oracle, to hear his insights into the world of IT.

Stroz, who has been a full-stack developer for longer than the term “full-stack developer” has been around, is passionate about sharing what he has learned on his coding journey. His talk covered the critical roles of database administrators and developers and emphasized the importance of continuous learning in the technology field.

Below are some insights Stroz shared:

The role of a DBA: Guardians of data
Stroz highlighted database administrators’ pivotal role in ensuring an organization’s data is safe, secure, and accessible. From managing disaster recovery plans to handling security and access permissions, DBAs are the unsung heroes who ensure data is protected from potential threats and is available when needed. This discussion offered students a glimpse into the complexity and responsibility involved in managing enterprise databases.

Stroz walked students through a typical day of a software developer, highlighting the challenges and rewards of the profession. He offered students practical tips on the significance of each aspect of the job and advised students to focus on solving known problems before speculating about potential problems.

The key to staying relevant: Lifelong learning
Stroz reminded students that technology evolves rapidly, making continuous learning essential for IT professionals. He warned against complacency, emphasizing that those who stop learning risk becoming obsolete in the field.

 Special opportunities for Carey students
As a token of appreciation, attendees were generously provided a voucher for a paid Oracle certification. Stroz also discussed training and certification opportunities for Carey students. These initiatives are a great way for students to gain valuable credentials and enhance their career prospects while in their degree program.

Stroz’s visit was an inspiring and powerful reminder of the opportunities and responsibilities that come with a career in IT. Students left the session motivated to embrace learning, refine their skills, and prepare for the challenges of the tech industry.
