A deeper look into Carey’s Master of Science in Marketing program

Learn more about the curriculum from Ning Li, academic program director and professor for the Master of Science in Marketing program.

Marketing in the digital age is constantly evolving. To meet the growing demand for capable and confident marketing professionals, the Master of Science in Marketing program at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is designed to challenge you to explore current and future trends in the industry.

Both the full-time and part-time programs offer similar curriculums, but the full-time program is STEM-designated, emphasizing marketing analytics, market theory, and practical applications. The part-time program is fully online, with a flexible format that allows you to complete the program at a pace that works for your lifestyle.

To gain a better understanding of the curriculum, we spoke with Academic Program Director and Professor Ning Li. Here is what you can expect as a student in the program:

Q: What makes the marketing program unique compared to other MSM programs in the United States?
A: The Master of Science in Marketing program’s cutting-edge curriculum features a balanced range of courses in strategy, behavior, and quantitative methods and analytics. Our world-class faculty equip students with foundational marketing principles as well as emerging technologies such as AI in marketing.

We encourage students to strive to make a positive impact on society. Our locations in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., provide convenient access to exciting companies, organizations, and government agencies, and thus offer a wealth of opportunities. Furthermore, Carey’s marketing program has a large network of thousands of alumni located in the United States, China, Europe, India, South Korea, and other countries.

Q: What careers does this program prepare students for, and how does it do so?
A: The program provides a large number of electives designed for students pursuing diverse career tracks. After graduation, our students work in fields such as technology, consumer packaged goods, automobile manufacturing, cosmetics, financial institutions, food manufacturing, and more.

Q: What types of hands-on, real-world projects or case studies do students work on?
A: In almost every course, students analyze cases about real-world companies and work on projects involving real companies. Some courses may require students to identify a real company’s marketing challenge and develop a marketing plan to overcome it, while other courses may have students work on projects for which a company has asked for our students’ input.

Q: Are there opportunities for students to specialize or tailor their learning experience?
A: Depending on their career preference, students can choose different electives to tailor their learning experience. For example, if a student is interested in becoming a brand manager, the Branding & Marketing Communications course would be helpful. A student who wants to work in the business-to-business field will find the elective Business-to-Business Marketing & Channel Strategy useful.

Q: Does the program incorporate a global perspective on marketing, and if so, what opportunities do students have to explore international markets?
A: Several marketing courses cover international marketing topics and cases of companies located in various countries. Plus Carey has students from over 40 countries, and that also provides opportunities for students to understand different cultures and develop a global perspective.
