With rapid advancements in AI and digital transformation, staying ahead requires technical expertise and strategic insight. We spoke with Changmi Jung, academic program director and associate professor of practice, about what students can expect from their courses with the updated curriculum for the full-time and part-time Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence for Business program. From hands-on projects to cutting-edge courses, Jung shares how the program equips students with the skills to lead in a tech-driven world.
Q: Will there be opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world projects?
A: Absolutely. Our program emphasizes experiential learning through a project-based capstone course, where students collaborate with real industry partners to tackle actual business challenges. This capstone is a cornerstone of the curriculum, providing invaluable experience in applying classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Several other courses incorporate projects that use real-world data, ensuring that students consistently engage in hands-on learning throughout the program. These experiences equip our graduates with practical, job-ready skills that set them apart in the job market.
Q: How does this curriculum stay relevant and up-to-date with AI advancements?
A: We ensure our curriculum reflects the latest AI trends by offering cutting-edge courses like “AI Essentials for Business,” where students dive into deep learning techniques, and “Generative AI,” one of the hottest topics in the field today. In the “Generative AI” course, students will learn to build, train, evaluate, and refine generative AI systems, applying these systems to create content such as images and videos. Our “Responsible AI” course addresses AI governance and the ethical, responsible development and use of AI technologies—currently the most frequently discussed topic in the world of AI. The “Human-AI Fusion” course also focuses on designing AI augmentation and automation to enhance human productivity, blending fun and insightful knowledge about AI and the human brain. Throughout the program, students develop essential programming skills and use state-of-the-art AI tools, ensuring they are prepared to lead in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Q: How does this program integrate AI and information systems?
A: The program seamlessly combines AI techniques with modern information systems to provide a holistic understanding of how technology drives business transformation. Students learn to leverage AI for data analysis, automation, and decision-making while mastering foundational information systems concepts like database management and digital transformation strategies. Courses such as, “Digital Transformation” and “AI Development and Business Applications,” are central to this integration, equipping students with the knowledge to apply AI tools effectively within information systems frameworks. This integrated approach prepares graduates to lead in tech-driven industries.
Q: What platforms or software will students learn and/or use hands-on in the classroom?
A: Students will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and platforms, including SQL, Python, cloud platforms like AWS, and tools like TensorFlow and PyTorch. They will also work with data visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau and data analysis programs like R and R Studio. Students will gain experience with MS Autogen Studio, Langchain–for building LLM-powered applications, Docker–for containerizing and deploying applications, and emerging technologies like vector databases. Students can also elect to learn Java and develop internet systems and services through specialized elective courses, ensuring they are proficient with the tools most relevant to their future careers.
Q: How does this curriculum prepare students for future advancements in the field?
A: Our curriculum is designed to future-proof students by equipping them with foundational knowledge and expertise in emerging technologies. Courses like “Cyber Network,” which deals with cybersecurity, ensure students understand how to protect data and systems in an increasingly digital world. We also cover AI ethics, data privacy, and scalable cloud solutions, giving students the tools to adapt to new technological advancements. This comprehensive approach prepares graduates to thrive in evolving industries.
Q: What sets the curriculum apart from other programs?
A: Our program offers one of the most comprehensive AI curricula available, from AI governance and strategic leadership to the most advanced, hands-on learning in Generative AI techniques.
