Admitted Students Day at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School offers more than the typical school visit. The day is meant to help our admitted students envision what their life would look like at Carey, and it offers them firsthand insights into the Carey community, our programs, and career resources.
Our Admitted Students Days typically consist of a full day of events. The day begins with brief remarks from school leadership, followed by conversations with student organizations, departments such as the Office of Student Enrollment and Account Management and Career & Life Design, and tours around the building. From there, the day branches into tailored sessions, including a “Carey 101” overview for admitted students, and a student panel open to all attendees, where students can hear honest thoughts from their peers on the academic and student experience.
Beyond the academic perspectives, Admitted Students Day offers a more personal element: a sense of fit. The energy at Carey, the dynamics between students, and the accessibility of support systems all provide a better feel when experienced in person. It’s the moment when a program shifts from being one of several options to feeling like the right choice.
To better understand the impact of the day, we spoke to incoming MBA student Emmanuel Vincent about why he chose to attend, what stood out, and how the experience shaped his decision.
Q: Why did you choose Johns Hopkins Carey Business School?
A: Choosing Carey was a very deliberate decision for me. I wanted a place where I could really understand the business side of health, not just the clinical or programmatic side that I’ve been immersed in for years.
Johns Hopkins has a strong reputation in medicine, but what stood out to me was the ecosystem around it. There’s a clear connection between health care, innovation, and commercialization. I saw several digital health and innovative health care solutions that didn’t just exist as ideas but were being developed, scaled, and sustained through that ecosystem. At that point, I knew that is where I need to be.
Q: Why an MBA?
A: Over the past decade, I have worked on large-scale TB and HIV programs in Nigeria, operating within complex, donor-funded health systems. This experience has given me a clear understanding of both what drives impact and what limits sustainability. While many interventions including digital tools, service delivery models, and program innovations demonstrate strong short-term outcomes, a recurring challenge is their dependence on external funding. When that funding cycle ends, continuity and scale are often difficult to maintain.
This has made me believe that achieving long-term health systems strengthening, particularly in Africa, requires a shift toward more sustainable and market-informed approaches. Health interventions need to be designed not only for impact, but also for financial viability, scalability, and integration into broader economic systems. This is where principles of business strategy, commercialization, and value creation become critical.
For me, pursuing an MBA is a deliberate step toward building the capabilities required to drive this shift. When I reflect on my career, four themes consistently define my approach: strategy, innovation, leadership, and transformation. I see Carey as the ideal environment to further develop these competencies and position myself to lead efforts that transform the business of health in Africa at scale.
Q: Why did you choose to attend Admitted Students Day?
A: I attended Admitted Students Day because I wanted to start engaging early. I wanted to meet people, ask honest questions, and get a feel for what the experience would really be like. Although, I didn’t expect it to be as impactful as it eventually turned out.
Listening to current students talk about what they had achieved in just two years was honestly inspiring. Some had launched businesses and others had taken on opportunities I hadn’t even thought about yet. It helped me expand my thinking about what’s possible.
Q: What stood out most to you when you arrived at Carey?
A: When I arrived, the first thing that struck me was how organized everything was. There was a level of intentionality in how the day was planned. It didn’t feel random or rushed. Everything had a purpose, and that gave me confidence in the kind of structure I’m stepping into. It may seem like a small thing, but it made a strong impression on me.
Q: Who did you connect with (students, alumni, faculty, departments) and how did those conversations shape your perspective?
A: The conversations I had that day were probably the most valuable part of the experience. Everyone was open, honest, and willing to share their experiences.
What stood out to me was how real those conversations were. People talked about their journeys, their challenges, and what they’ve been able to achieve at Carey. It made everything feel more relatable and even more possible.
Q: Did the event influence your confidence in Carey’s ability to support your career goals at all?
A: Before the event, I believed Carey was the right choice. After the event, I knew it. I think it made a whole lot of difference. Being there, seeing the environment, meeting people, and hearing their stories made everything clearer for me. I left feeling genuinely happy about my decision.
Q: What was your biggest takeaway from the day?
A: To sum it up, my biggest takeaway is this: there are more opportunities here than I initially realized. Carey is not just a place to study. It’s a place where you can grow into something bigger, whether that’s building a business, leading an initiative, or shaping an entirely new path. It’s really just amazing, the level of transformation that is possible at Carey.
