Milan’s iconic architecture and rich cultural attractions set the scene–but for Carey students, the real discovery was inside the walls of leading hospitals and health care organizations.
Carey’s Global Immersion course Italy – Health Care in Europe: Models, Regulation, and Business course brought students to Milan, where they explored European health care systems and compared them to those in the United States. Through hands-on experiences and discussions with industry leaders, students examined a mix of public and private health care models, learned national- and EU-level regulations, and gained insights into the business side of health care in Europe. Engaging with professionals from these organizations gave them a broad understanding of how different health care models function across sectors.
The students took trips to organizations including Niguarda Hospital, learning about their daily operations and Johns Hopkins University’s SAIS Europe, engaging with faculty and students. They also visited Zambon, exploring how a pharmaceutical company fosters innovation through global strategy, startup partnerships, and open innovation; OpenZone, an inspiring space dedicated to life sciences innovation; and Osservatori Digitali at Milan Politecnico, taking part in a strategy challenge focused on digital health transformation and the impact of AI on the future of health care. At Bracco Imaging the students discussed medical imaging and global health care with their leaders, and took a trip to the University of Bologna, learning about AI in medicine.
