Tech, society, and the human element: A week of learning in London

Carey students traveled to London, England to meet with industry leaders to learn how digital innovation is shaping society.

As part of the Global Immersion course Technology & Society through a Behavioral Economics Lens, Carey Business School students traveled to London, England to explore how technology is reshaping society and how behavioral economics can influence the way we innovate and engage with emerging technologies in both work and life.

Over the week-long experience, students met with leaders across technology, finance, start-ups, consulting, and policy to explore pressing topics shaping our everchanging digital world. Topics included digital transformation, financial technology innovation, the social impact of artificial intelligence, and the evolving regulatory environment.

London, known as a global hub for technology and policy innovation, provided the ideal backdrop for these discussions. Through company visits, lectures, and panels, Carey students shared ideas and experiences with colleagues from around the world. These conversations deepened students’ understanding of today’s fast-moving digital landscape and highlighted ways to leverage technology for meaningful, positive impact in society.

Each day offered thought-provoking conversations with industry leaders. Highlights included discussions with Neil Lawrence and Parmy Olson, who shared insights from their books The Atomic Human and Supremacy: AI, ChatGPT, and the Race that will Change the World, as well as sessions with Deutsche Bank on the future of digital currencies. Students also spoke with leaders from KPMG about digital transformation and met with a managing director from the UK Behavioural Insights Team–a leading behavioral policy organization–on the evolving role of behavioral economics in public policy.

“I gained a broader perspective on how behavioral economics can be used to shape policy in response to the rapid advancement of AI and digital tools,” said current Business Analytics student, Rosarys Esquilin. “Meeting professionals from the Behavioural Insights Team and attending panel discussions helped me see how real-world decision-making is influenced by both data and human behavior. It showed me that there's space for someone like me, someone interested in data science, social impact, and technology, to make meaningful contributions in my career.”

Students also engaged with professionals from the Financial Conduct Authority, Competition and Markets Authority, Mozilla, Meta, AstraZeneca, Data Transfer Initiative, Theia Insights, Acurable, Point72 Ventures, Keystone, Imperial College, Fidelity, and the UK Parliament.

“This class introduced me to a whole new perspective–ways technology affects, shapes, and disrupts society,” said Esquilin. “In the age of big tech and AI, we’ve already seen the darker side of innovation. This trip gave me insight into how businesses, policymakers, and society are responding to these rapidly growing tools.”
